CCS students Christian Carr and Alyvia Hoholik recently participated in the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence’s (OPDV) technology-facilitated abuse summit. Carr and Hoholik were two of six students from across the state to participate.
“It was eye opening to hear people’s stories in person,” said Carr. “Hearing people our age experience technology-based domestic violence made the experience very relatable.”
In addition to participating on the panel, Carr and Hoholik, along with Principal Caroline Goss, were given a tour of the Capitol.
Digital Threats Real Harm: Empowering and Protecting Youth in the Digital Era brings together parents, educators, law enforcement and other youth-based organizations to learn about the dangers of technology-facilitated abuse. The summit featured key speakers and workshops covering timely topics, like Teens, Technology, and Romantic Relationships, Al Companions and Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence, and Stalking 2.0: The Use of Technology to Stalk.
Day 1 of the summit concluded with a Youth Panel Discussion featuring high schoolers from across the state, including Bethlehem, Cambridge and Long Island.
“Having the opportunity to sit on the panel gave me a perspective to realize that situations we hear about are actually true,” said Hoholik. “How we use these tools really matters and sitting on the panel will forever change how I use technology.”
