Cambridge Central School Board Narrows Field to One

The Cambridge Central School District Board of Education, in its search for the new superintendent of schools, has narrowed the field of qualified candidates to one sole finalist. The Cambridge Board of Education began the search process last fall. The process included an online survey to obtain feedback from the community regarding the characteristics, skills and experience desired in the next school district leader; 265 people responded to the survey. The Board used the results of the survey to screen applications against the standards, which were established by the Board using the results of the survey. Four candidates were invited to participate in an initial interview with the Board. Subsequently, the Board selected three candidates to be interviewed by two Advisory Committees made up of community members, staff, parents, and students. Due to unforeseen circumstances, two of the three candidates were withdrawn from the search. Based upon the initial interviews, and in-depth feedback from the Advisory Committees, the Cambridge Board has decided to move forward.

The finalist for the position is Dr. Douglas Silvernell, currently the Assistant Superintendent for 21st Century Teaching and Learning at the Saratoga Springs City School District.

Stated Board President Neil Gifford, “After an initial interview with the Board of Education and subsequent interviews with two advisory committees comprised of 23 stakeholders from the community, it was abundantly clear to us that Dr. Silvernell has the skills, experiences, and attributes needed to lead our district. The entire Board was very impressed with Dr. Silvernell’s commitment to community; proven record with academics, and effective leadership skills. We are committed to finding the best possible superintendent for our district. As such, we will be using the final steps in the process to make our decision.”

As part of the finalist process, Dr. Silvernell will present his entrance plan to the public on March 20, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. It is expected that the session will be about one hour in length. This presentation is open to all community members, parents, staff members and students.  The Board will then conduct a final interview later that evening.

According to District Superintendent James Dexter, “The Cambridge Board was confident in their decision in moving forward with Dr. Silvernell as the sole finalist. In reaching this determination, the Board conducted initial interviews and received feedback from the two advisory committees. I am pleased with the professional and rigorous process that the Board put in place. Lastly, the Board and I are appreciative of the twenty-three individuals who composed the advisory committees from across the community.  Both committees conducted their assigned tasks in a professional and thoughtful manner.”
