Cambridge Board Intends to Appoint Superintendent

The Cambridge Central School District Board of Education is pleased to announce its intent to appoint Dr. Douglas Silvernell as Superintendent of Schools at a special meeting of the Board of Education on April 17, 2019. Dr. Silvernell is currently the Assistant Superintendent for 21st Century Teaching and Learning at the Saratoga Springs City School District.

Board President Neil Gifford said, “The Board of Education is proud and grateful for the time and talent donated by more than 30 district residents, parents, students, faculty and staff for their invaluable assistance in selecting a Superintendent. We are also incredibly thankful to the Washington, Saratoga, Warren, Hamilton, Essex (WSWHE) BOCES staff for facilitating a balanced, open and professional selection process.”

The Board is offering Silvernell a four-year agreement with an initial salary of $150,000. He is expected to begin his duties on July 1, 2019.

“We are fortunate to have found a candidate that is not only exceptionally qualified with essential curriculum and management experience, but that also has the interpersonal and communication skills needed for effective leadership. It is also clear that Dr. Silvernell has combined these attributes with life experiences that provide him with a genuine understanding of the value of an education, hard work, and service to the future of our kids and community. Dr. Silvernell was clearly the best choice for the future of Cambridge Central School,” said Gifford

Dr. Silvernell has been with the Saratoga City School District for the past 6 1/2 years.  He began his career in education in 1994 as a History Teacher at the North Warren Central School District. Silvernell then spent 18 years at the Queensbury Union Free School District where he was hired as a Middle School Social Studies Teacher, before becoming the Educational Technologist/Technology Director in 1999. In 2001 Silvernell was appointed as the Middle School Assistant Principal until he was promoted to Middle School Principal. He held that position from July 2003 – July 2012.

“I feel as though the wide variety of experiences I have had throughout my career will be very beneficial as I join the Cambridge family,” said Silvernell.  “I believe my experiences in strategic planning, curriculum and instruction, and technology will help guide my work with the Cambridge Central School District team.”

Silvernell earned a Bachelor of Arts in History at the State University of New York at Albany.  His Master’s degree in Secondary Social Studies is from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh where he also earned his Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Educational Leadership. He recently earned his Doctorate in Educational Systems Leadership at the Esteves School of Education through The Sage Colleges.  He holds the following certifications:  NYS School District Administrator, NYS School Administrator/Supervisor, and NYS Permanent Social Studies 7-12 Teacher.

Silvernell said, “I am extremely excited to join a team that publicly displays its core values, and I look forward to working in a community that has such great pride in its school.  I could not be more fortunate than to join a district that openly values creativity, diversity, trust, and high expectations.  These are values I have continuously pursued throughout my life and career. The fact that my personal values are very much aligned to the Cambridge values is very exciting for me.”

WSWHE BOCES District Superintendent James Dexter, who coordinated the search on behalf of the district, said: “The Cambridge Board of Education search process contained a good mix of rigor and community involvement.  Everyone involved kept the best interests of the students in mind and found the candidate who best fits their ideals. The Board, school, and community put considerable time and effort into the search process and I would like to thank all of the individuals who participated in the selection process, including the advisory committees.”

Silvernell will replace Superintendent Vince Canini. Silvernell enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, reading, athletics, and outdoor activities.
