I am writing to ask all of our parents to review internet and social media expectations with their children. In the past several years there has been an increase in social media and cell phone use with our children who are pre-teens and younger. The kids are very tech savvy, in many cases, they know way more about the devices than we do, so we sometimes look the other way and trust their judgement.
This letter is just a reminder that these kids are very young and still developing both physically and socially. While they seem to be tech savvy, they are not always understanding the very real and potentially serious implications of social media and internet misuse. In recent years, I have witnessed many incidents of cyber bullying or other types of social media mishaps that make their way into the school.
I am respectfully requesting that parents take the time to regularly check on their child’s devices and find out what they are doing online and how much time they are spending on those devices. There are many risks involved when young children are unsupervised on the internet. I’ve included one of many articles that are available to help parents monitor children on line. There are many additional resources if you feel like you need more assistance. As always, feel free to contact me regarding this or other topics relating to school. Thank you so much for your support in this very important matter.
