NOVEL INFLUENZA A DIAGNOSIS IN
CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL DISTRICT
This weekend, Superintendent
Dan Severson was notified by the Washington County Health
Department Director, Ms. Patricia Hunt, that a Cambridge Central
School student was diagnosed with Novel Influenza A (H1N1) also
known as the Swine Flu. The student is recovering and at home.
At this time, the Washington
County Health Department has advised us that students who are not
ill can continue to attend school. We are consulting with local
health officials regarding best practices for infection control as
well as cleaning practices for our school. However, to keep flu
from spreading to more people, we ask that you keep sick children
home. Any children who come to school with flu-like symptoms or
respiratory illness will have to be sent home.
Flu-like symptoms include:
fever (over 100 degrees F.), feverishness, cough, sore throat,
runny nose, or stuffy nose. Additional symptoms which may be
experienced with Swine Flu are muscle pain, fatigue, and sometimes
vomiting or diarrhea. If you suspect your child is getting flu,
it is essential that he/she does not attend school or go anywhere
else-such as group childcare, the mall, or sporting events-where
other people would be exposed to the virus. Children who are
getting ill may exhibit different behavior than usual, such as
eating less or being irritable.
Again, this is an evolving
situation. The District continues to receive regular information
and support from the State Department of Health, the State
Education Department, the State Emergency Management Office, and
the Washington County Department of Health. We will keep you
updated with pertinent information as it becomes available.
Effective immediately, the School Medical Director has approved
the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers for use in our
facilities. Parents may provide written notification to the
school if they do not wish to have their child use this product.
If hand sanitizers are made available, students should use them
under adult supervision. It is recommended that hand sanitizers
should be used where traditional soap and water is not readily
accessible.

Notice to everyone who drops
students off at C.C.S.
The Board of Education and Administration of the Cambridge
Central School are hereby notifying all residents of our district
that a major concern exists around those areas identified as
student drop-off and pick-up points on or near the school campus.
As safety of our students is our number one concern, the school
district has worked hand-in-hand with the Cambridge Police
Department to identify proper drop-off and pick-up procedures.
The following guidelines will now be employed:
1.
Students dropped off in the morning in the newly painted
designated areas in front of the science wing for 7-12 and the
newly painted designated areas in front of the gymnasium for K-6.
Do not let your child off if your car is not in one of these
areas. Please be respectful and allow every other car to proceed
so that no one has to wait beyond a reasonable period of time.
2.
Parents should not drop their children off directly from
State Route 22. The White Creek Town office Building parking lot
may be used for morning student drop-off. Students will be
escorted across Route 22 by our school crossing guard.
With the help of the Police
Department, the enforcement of the traffic rules on our campus
will be more noticeable. The public's assistance is
appreciated in helping make our campus a safer place for our
students and staff. Should anyone have any questions
regarding this very important matter or have suggestions on how to
improve the traffic flow, feel free to call Mr.Vince Canini
Superintendent, at 677-2653 ext. 1014, Ms.Colleen Lester,
Elementary Principal, at 677-8527 ext. 1433, or Mr.Chris Signor,
High School Principal at 677-8527 ext. 1411.
