Elementary Earth Club sponsors recycled art contest

The Elementary Earth (Environment) Club recently sponsored a recycled art contest as part of Earth Day/Earth Week in April. Students were encouraged to make something out of used items from around the house. A total of 20 students participated by turning in a project. The High School Environment Club members judged items made by students from all grades. There were three winners of gift certificates to Stewart’s shops and five honorable mention awards! All participants received a certificate of participation, had their entries placed on display in the showcase at the four corners and will have their entries on display with other clubs for this year’s budget vote.

Elementary Earth Club is for students in grades 3-6. This year, they focused on learning and teaching others how to be wise consumers and to be careful about buying items that have recyclable and/or redeemable packaging. They learned how some plastics can be recycled and which ones cannot. They also learned about trying to keep as much out of the landfill as possible. In conjunction with the High School Environment Club, elementary students collected redeemable cans and bottles from various bins around the school and the high school students returned the redeemables to the CLINK program. Elementary students learned how to determine which items are recyclable and during Earth Week, made announcements to teach others about finding the items which can be redeemed or recycled.

Club advisors are Penny LaPointe and Ellen Branham.
