On Thursday, May 28, two representatives from Casella Waste Systems, Inc., Martin Golubski and Sondra Germer, came to Cambridge Elementary School to award Gloria Hamilton for her submission in Casella’s annual calendar contest! Gloria’s entry received honorable mention and will be included in the 2027 calendar which will be displayed at CCS. Gloria is the daughter of Georgianna and Joe Hamilton.
Each year, Casella Waste sponsors a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Art Calendar Contest for third grade students across multiple states. They receive thousands of entries and choose only twelve for the monthly calendar, with additional honorable mentions. This year, they received 2,731 entries, with 645 in New York state alone. According to the rules of the contest, the artwork must relate to the environment, recycling and the re-use of materials, reduction of waste, landfills or trash and recycling trucks.
The Elementary Earth Club coordinates submissions, but students do not have to be participants in the club to submit an entry. The afterschool club promotes learning how to be smart consumers, recognizing how to determine if a package/container can be recycled, promoting recycling/redemption of containers in the school and looking at the many ways they can take care of their environment by reducing waste. The club is open to students in grades 3-6. The advisors are Ellen Branham and Penny LaPointe.
